Did I already name an entry that?

Meh.

In any event, since this thing is gathering dust by the truckload, I'm going to try something a bit different.
From now on, I'm logging all the IRC chats I'm in every day ( which are numerous ) and posting them all on here. So you get a nice overview of what exactly it is I do online. How quaint.

Wonder how long this will take before LJ throws me out...not long considering the subject matter that comes up on IRC with regularity.

Here goes nothing....well..."goes" at the end of the day.
<lj:music>the hum of my new processor fan</lj:music>

Well, a random person from Newgrounds Chat brought it to my attention that it has now been a whopping 40 WEEKS since I last posted on here.

Yowza.

So, here goes! Gosh...where the hell do I even start?

Lets seeeeeeeeeee....

First off, I've applied to the Digital Arts and Sciences masters program at the University of Florida. I think I put together a pretty killer application if I do say so myself. If you feel like checking out the digital part of my portfolio, you can see the online version, but the lucky reviewers get to see the full-size fully-scalable work in CD format, with a neato-keen application packet booklet thing to boot. I'm pretty proud of it, hope it gets me in.

In work related things, I've been offered a position as a DKC, that's Dedicated Key Carrier. What this would entail is a pay raise and more responsibilities, and what basically amounts to a managerial position. Now, while I'd love the extra cash, and that particular check in my resume column, I'm trying to get back to school full time ( see above ). I really really don't want to short-change my education, as I want to become a professor in the long term, and need a MA to do so. Sucks to have to turn down money and such, but it's better off in the end methinks.

In other news, I went and bought a motorcycle ( don't kill me mom O_O ). Yep, off eBay nonetheless! Got a great deal on a '95 Suzuki Katana in less-than-stellar condition. Needs a bit of work, but I've managed to come across two friends who either have or have had bikes and are more than enthusiastic to give me a hand getting her road ready. Can't wait to tell you the truth...

In other news, I've been made an OP on the aforementioned Newgrounds Chat. Lots of cool people in there, and it's become somewhat of my home online along with the rest of Newgrounds.com. Feel free to drop in and say hello...I'm most often in there.

Oh yeah, and I got a processor upgrade with my Xmas money. 1.7 GHZ. Go me.

It seems I'm breaking a trend by posting twice today. I've always posted only once on any given day, and lately only one day a month, normally towards the end. I find it both odd and interesting that I'd fall into a cycle of sorts of times when I would and wouldn't post. It makes me wonder if there is some kind of internal social monthly cycle I go through. It's entirely possible I suppose...a fluctuation like a woman's menses, but nothing so pronounced.

Interesting, I wonder if there has been anything published on this.

I like my new free thought journal format...I think I shall keep this up.

What a crazy crazy way of exploring the self. Technology gets taken for granted when you can access it so readily...it becomes an ordinary thing, instead of an extraordinary thing. That I am able to search across the entire world to find information or read the posted lives of others seems mundane, when it was so thoroughly unimaginable just 20 years ago.

Sharing a good conversation with a friend several states away is a definite good thing in my book. I think I'll keep this internet thingy.

    <lj:music>Rammstein: Seemann</lj:music>

Heh...a friend from my airsofting group Nerdwarz sent me a link to his LJ, and I likewise sent him mine. His first comment was "you never post apparently" which is about right. Now I feel bad, so I'm gonna bring everyone up to speed...or something to that effect.

Since I started out on the topic of airsoft, I'll give you an update on our latest outing. I finally got a chance to use my freaking huge 1200 round drum magazine, and it made a hell of a lot of difference in both my, and our group's playing style. Having 1200 rounds on tap instantly turns your gun into the Squad Automatic Weapon. As a SAW gunner, I spent most of the day acting like a bullet hose, keeping heads down and generally filling the air with rounds. I must say I do like it a lot, and will most likely upgrade my gun to follow in this line of work. Having a SAW gunner is a definite advantage to tactical movement as it allows everyone to move under cover fire without having to worry about conserving ammo.

In other airsoft news, I've sold both of my MP5Ks, which is a nice addition to the "fund to pay off the new gun." In doing so I found out about a crazy event going on in the coming weeks. From what I hear the scenario will be held fighting through an abandoned high school scheduled for demolition. Insane. I've got to hit up Florida Airsoft and get the details...and ask off work!

Speaking of work, things on that end of the spectrum have been going exceedingly well. I've been chosen to go on several "special missions" to other stores in the area. My boss apparently likes my work ethic and thinks I'm one of the best employees he's had, despite my only being there for a few months. From what I can gather, my name has filtered up a bit in the corporate hierarchy, and that can't be a bad thing. In fact, I've been nominated to go with one of our managers to an especially bad store north of here on a 3 day "field trip" to get it back in line. Another of my supervisors mentioned that I could / should look into management training. Sounds cool to me...pay raise and management experience can't be bad. The workload would increase, yes, but I've never been one to slouch when it comes to hard work. I pride myself on a job well done, and it appears to have paid off.

In other news, I've finally reached level 10 and 1,000 posts on the Newgrounds BBS! Probably doesn't mean all that much to you, but it's an accomplishment in my book. Sadly, that's where I've been spending nearly all my online time, instead of posting here. I've got to get a handle on that...learn to be more varied in my online presence.

In the coming weeks my parents will be coming down for a visit as well. I miss them a bit, it will be nice to have some time to catch up in person. IM and phone conversations only go so far. I think we're going to hit up a manatee place at some point in their visit. That should also be pretty damn cool. I've never seen a manatee before, and I bet they'd be neat to hang out with. Like happy walruses.

Now lets see if I can't be more up to date on this little journal thing. It's not very conducive to reading if it's always the same thing now is it?

Yea ladies and gentlemen, that's right. The latest greatest update to newevolution.org is complete. Not a lot to say about it really...touched up some style sheet stuff so the links now only underline on hover, reworked the frontpage to have the same effect, and totally reworked a phpBB template to give my new forum the NE look.

In other news I dropped an ungodly amount of money into purchasing a new airsoft weapon based on Heckler and Koch's G36C assault rifle. It's a beautiful piece of machinery and I can't wait to take it and it's mammoth 1200 round drum magazine out for the skirmish coming up on Saturday. My only disappointment was the Dragon Arms G36KE kit arrived with a broken carrying handle. I've already written to Redwolf Airsoft about it, and they're seeing what they can do. Hope I'm not S.O.L. on that little piece of weapony goodness...it looks evil when mounted to my rifle, and is pretty much necessary for the sniper-ish work I want to eventually do to it. If worse comes to worse I'll just pick up the Classic Army version I suppose. It doesn't have the upper carry handle with integrated 3x sight and laser assembly, but the quality of the handguard/barrel seems much better and more realistic as well.

And now, to bed. 3:33 AM...make a wish.

I guess that natural nice-guy-ness does come in handy after all...and my extensive knowledge of things electronical doesn't hurt.

On the homefront, Karla and I took a trip down to a pepper grower just south of Lake Okeechobee last weekend. Quite the adventure as we didn't think ahead enough to reserve any overnight accommodations. We ended up finally finding a wacky little motel in the next town over at about 2 AM. Heh...Karla wasn't too happy about still being up at that point, but it was par for the course for me. Anywho, we ended up meeting the grower the next morning bright and early. He showed us around his fields, and told us how to identify peppers that were infested with weevils. Apparently weevily peppers' calyxes ( that little star-shaped part that connects the pepper to the plant, including the stem ) turn yellow. We collected 4 plastic grocery bags worth of weevily peppers in short notice once we found a really badly infested field. Oh yeah...I should perhaps mention why in tarnation we would want a bunch of weevily peppers...hehe. Karla is studying towards her doctorate in entomology, and has chosen to study the pepper weevil in that respect. Most of her work will be on plant-insect interaction, so she'll be studying what chemical and other clues tell the weevils when and what peppers in which to lay their eggs. Their little larvae cause a lot of damage to the pepper industry, and as such she should be able to get some good funding for the benefits to controlling this pest that will be able to be derived from her work. We were trying to get the necessary weevils to start a colony with so she could carry out her research for the next 4-some-odd years. So far about 80 little pepper weevils have emerged from the peppers, which will hopefully be enough to get a good breeding colony going. I'm rather fond of the little guys...I've always like weevils as far as beetles / insects go...there's something about those long proboscises that's kind of cute.

On the web end of thigns, I'm planning on bringing the forum on my site online in the next week or so. The layout will look something like this LJ page, as I'd like to keep as much continuity as possible between the many parts of my extended web presence. I'm currently debating adding a background image to my entire site, but applying an overarching change that wasn't originally intended is giving me headaches. I'll most likely end up keeping it mostly as-is.

In other news, I've found a neato-keen online Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game called Yohoho! Puzzle Pirates. They call it a MMOArrrPG hahahh! I'm such a dork. Annnnyway, the game is made up of puzzles...like Tetris / Dr. Mario / matching type puzzles. You get a little pirate avatar, and you can work on merchant or pirate ships with crews of other players, and for each aspect of the game there's a puzzle. Sailing has a Dr. Mario-type puzzle...and the better the "crew members" are who are doing it, the faster your ship can sail. Navigation is a Palantir-type puzzle, pumping the bilge is a 4-in-a-row type piece swapping puzzle, and repairing the decks is a tetris type puzzle. Every puzzle is a hell of a lot of fun, and you get paid for doing them in doubloons. On top of that, you can attack and board enemy ships and steal their booty. There is a puzzle for loading and firing the cannons, and a puzzle for swordfighting which multiple players from both the attacking and defending ship can play at once, in head to head teams to determine who wins the battle and the booty! You can use this booty to buy your own ship, and neato-keen pirate era clothing...like conquistador armor and /or skull & bones bandanas...or use it to wager on swordfights you challenge other players to...or drinking games! You can't ever die....but lose enough battles and get shipwrecked by storms enough and you can lose a leg / eye / hand and get yourself a peg-leg, eyepatch, or hook! There's a free trial ( for Windows, Mac OS X.3, and Linux no less! ) and the game is insanely addictive fun. Hell, even all the players use pirate-speak by some unwritten convention. It's all like "Yarrr, that there was some fightin' t' be proud of, ya' salty dog!"

In other other news, I'm going to post on here more regularly...really.

Oh yeah...and word on the web is that gamers are trying to make <3 stand for "asshat" instead of "heart / love. Damn gamers...can't even come up with their own l33t sp33k...they gotta go and try and usurp a perfectly good ASCII saying.

Yep, you heard it. I got's myself a job! It's not the most interesting and / or lucrative of positions, nor does it have a ding-dang thing to do with my education. BUT, it is full time with health and dental benefits. SCORE! In case you were wondering, I'm working at the local OfficeMax. I'm a stocking associate, which means I've got to be in ass early on Fridays to offload the tractor trailer of shipments, but other than that I'm pretty much your average OfficeMax employee. They have an interesting system of cross-training everyone, so anyone can answer any customer's questions, run a register if needed etc. We also get Motorolla 2-way radios and headsets so we can communicate around the store. Quite an ingenious and time-saving device. It's just my luck that I'm coming in in time to learn the old register and inventory system just in time for it to be updated so I can learn it all over again. Yay. Stuff like that always ends up happening to me somehow, but I'm sure I'll manage.

In other news, I'm still an internet addict. I've added yet another webcomic to my weekly lineup, though this one is rather rarely updated. It's called Mall Monkeys and if you ever hung out at a mall in high school, or have ever been to a mall, or in high school I suggest you read it in the strongest of terms. The creators have done a fantastic job of capturing the mood and feel of that cilquey mess we all know and love.

Also, I've started roleplaying again...only this time online. Heh...go figure =P There is an online White Wolf's Vampire the Dark Ages campaign being run on a message board that a person I met on Newgrounds introduced me to. Good thing he did...I came up with an absolutely fantastic character description, and got some über bonus points for it. Most of you won't have a freakin' clue what I'm talking about, but I'm a 4th generation Tzimisce, and can royally screw stuff up. It's awesome to finally get to play the vampire role I've always wanted to.

Other than those new developments, things go about as they have for the past couple months. I'm totally loving this toasty Florida winter. The car is a pain in the ass requiring some $700 to replace a explodified radiator and other maintenance chores. *sigh* What can you do I guess. At least I have a job now =)

Ooooh...and I updated my site so it's all spifferiffic now =D Check it out with the links at the bottom

Well. It seems the Christian Right ( which is neither ) are pushing for a constitutional amendment outlawing same-sex marriage, and that Bush is leaning ever more towards it. Apparently "equal protection under the law" doesn't apply if the Christians think you're a "bad person." How long is it until Muslims aren't allowed to marry and we close down all mosques as terrorist organizations? I swear this country is on the fast track to a fascism that would rival Nazi Germany. I give it 10 years before we replace The Pledge of Allegiance with "Hail Victory" ( direct English translation of the German "sieg heil" ). I can't understand how the supposed "land of the free" can even think of passing such initiatives. I wish the rest of the world would simply unite and lay the smack down on us. Yeah, like that's going to happen.

*sigh* If Bush gets reelected and actually starts pulling off this right wing B.S. I'm moving to Europe.

Well, I was perusing my webcomics when I found this on Wigu's site. Their name is NESkimo, and they take old classic Nintendo songs and recompose them using heavy-metal guitar stylings. Their stuff is free to download and I must admit quite well done. My personal favorites are Mega Man 2 - Dr Wiley 1 and Contra - Base.

I've also been told about a free online game that seems like a neat combination of Worms, and an RPG wherein you lob different projectiles at each other in hopes of killing you opponents or knocking them off the board. It's called Gunbound and it's a free download for all you Windows users. Unfortunately it's not out for Mac, so I just have to sit on the sidelines and lament how cool it is and the dearth of such games for my most excellent OS.

    <lj:music>Luke Slater: I Can Complete You</lj:music>

Gaaaaaah! I hit the wrong combination of keys to view the source of the HTML page I use to put the end links on my LJ posts and emptied the cache...thereby deleting this entire post. I freaking hate starting over....so damn much HTML and crap in this one. Arrrrrgh.

So, as I mentioned in an earlier post, the 'puter fairy was very good to me this Xmas and among other goodies I got Mac OS X.3. Well, as soon as I got down to Florida, I upgraded my OS. Unfortunately the upgrade failed halfway through and I had to restart it. I think this is what so royally screwed my system. I lost my entire address book, all my internet favorites and bookmarks, my mail settings and filters, all my desktop display and navigation preferences. Ugh. It's taken me 2 days to get things back into some semblance of order. The worst part was my address book, not just for the emails, but for Instant Messenger. OS X has this amazing feature where it shows each person's name instead of their screen name in your buddy list. Fantastic for those screen names you can never connect to their respective people. Well, it also seemed like an easy way to rebuild my address book...just go through my entire buddy list and add the first and last name of everyone who has a screen name. Simple enough no? Well...every name I added took longer and longer to register, until at the end, it was seriously taking 5+ minutes. I'm guessing it has something to do with now with X.3 you can just slap information into a name from any program and it all happily compiles into a single address card. Back in X.2 if you threw a name in in Mail and then the same name in iChat, it would just make a duplicate of that name. Neat feature, but worth 5 minutes of time per name? I dunno.

So yeah...Karla and I are back in Florida. We were originally planning to head back on Monday, stay the night and arrive Tuesday, but she ended up feeling sickly so we held over 'til Tuesday. Once we were on the road, we realized we only had like 4 more hours to go at the time we planned to stop for the night, so we just drove straight through. Took 15 hours...a long haul, but not too bad considering we traded off in 4 hour shifts. Even the kitties handled the ride home much better than the ride up. It was really funny seeing them get back into the apartment. You could totally see the "hey...I remember this place!" in their faces and body language as they re-explored the apartment. I love cats. They're so intelligent and loving, as opposed to dogs who are more mediocre and loyal in contrast.

We actually got home a few days late. Karla looked at the first day of class for her Monday class and assumed that was the first day of class. Turns out classes actually started on this Tuesday so the first day of her Monday class was after a weeks worth of the rest of her classes. The long and short of it is she missed 2 classes. D'oh. In any case her profs seem pretty understanding, and her Monday class which she hasn't missed is the most important of this semester, so all's well that ends well no?

In other news, funny things! My web savvy friend Ken who's been featured in previous LJ entries has yet again pulled through with some gems of web humor. For the first one I'll submit to you dear readers a transcript of the actual Instant Messenger conversation we had as it nicely brackets and explains this ever-so-odd site:

Ken Kolano: This one's just weird, Sweatergirl http://www.lesliehall.com/8-sweaters.html
Ryan Tanay: wow...i'm scared
Ryan Tanay: ya think they could have picked someone...oh.....i dunno....less FREAKISH for their model.
Ken Kolano: Yeah she's sure something. Especially those pants.
Ryan Tanay: holy crap....once they all load it's like, seizure inducing

The second piece of funny appears courtesy of a user of our beloved LiveJournal. If you've seen The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, or read the book, you owe it to yourself to read the Return of the King, condensed parody version. It's absolute comedic gold...I nearly fell out of my chair laughing.

The final piece of funny pokes fun at everybody's favorite corporate monopoly / juggernaut, Microsoft. Yeah, it's been overdone, but this is really clever and witty and all those other things that Decorative Edison is so damn good at. Must be the reason it's the first webcomic I took up, and one of my favorites and the only one I regularly post on the forum of.

Now I'm going to bed...provided my 'puter doesn't eat this post again. =\

<lj:music>Some random stuff playing on my Dad's stereo</lj:music>

OK. It's my last day here in NJ before I head back to my apartment in Florida. Today also happens to be the first day after the holidays that my high school is open. Luckily my little brother is still in HS otherwise I wouldn't have known this, nor the fact that both my HS art teachers were asking about me. I decided to go visit them and a few other HS teachers whom I particularly liked. I always remembered college kids showing up during class when I was in HS and kibitzing with the teachers. It would certainly be nice to see the old classrooms and show off my artwork a bit. Anywho, I rolled up to the HS and went into the main office to sign in as a visitor. As I went over to the sign-in sheet, the secretary asked if I needed some help. I told her I was there to visit my old teachers. She asked who in particular, and I told her Mr. Eichenger, Ms. Kendrick, Mr. Grober and Mrs. Karl. "Oh," she said, "do they know you're coming?" Rather confused at this point I said, "ummm...no?" "Oh," she said, "you have to inform them first and then get a signed letter from the Wall Police Department." "Well," I told her, "I guess I won't be seeing them this year, as I'm headed back to Florida tomorrow," turned and left.

Seriously...what the fuck?

I understand and agree with signing in, so they know who the hell you are and why you're there, and can apprehend the proper person if you start spray-painting lockers and whatnot, but a signed letter from the police? Does this perhaps have something to do with post-Columbine HS security measures? Last time I checked, all those HS shootings were done by HS students in the particular school that got shot up...not returning alumni. Perhaps it's post 9/11 protocol...but I wasn't walking in with a knapsack full of anthrax or parking huge U-Haul truck full of diesel fuel and fertilizer in front of the auditorium. I'm supposed to contact the teachers I want to see, but honestly, who knows the phone numbers and addresses of their HS teachers? Hell, I suppose I could look them up, either online or otherwise, but that takes all the fun out of suddenly showing up in class and the look of surprise on their faces at seeing an old student. Hell, if I were a terrorist or school shooter, I would just walk the hell in and start blowing shit up...completely bypassing / destroying the main office. This stupid regulation only keeps returning alumni from visiting their HS teachers while doing nothing to prevent crazed madmen from destroying life and property on HS grounds. Nobody gave me a second look as I walked down the hall to the office, and I could easily have parked a van full of explosives next to nearly any part of the school. !!!DISCLAIMER - THIS IS NOT IN ANY WAY A TERRORIST THREAT NOR CAN IT BE CONSTRUED AS SUCH. THIS IS SIMPLY AND OBSERVATION AND CRITIQUE OF CURRENT SCHOOL SECURITY MEASURES!!! ( Can't be too careful in this crazy day and age. ) As you can see I'm pretty annoyed by all this. I'm going to try and hit up the HS's webpage and see if I can't send an email to those teachers I wanted to visit and see what they think about this whole thing.
<lj:music>The humming of various electrical things</lj:music>

Heh...my cats whoop on each other. I think it's a good thing though, since they've learned how hard they can bite without hurting. Now I can roughhouse with them and they'll only bite me hard enough to be annoying without actually breaking skin. Heh...it's fun to wrestle with Keeter when he's all riled up...Kibble not so much...he gets a bit too run-away-ish.

Karla and I went out to Trenton today and had lunch with the remainder of our friends we'd not already seen. Freaking excellent. We only hit up our old college diner, but that was the perfect atmosphere for kibitzing and enjoying each other's company. ( Hmmph...I still think eachother should be a word. ) I didn't realize how much I missed everyone until we were all together joking around and conversing again. I sure hope I can find some more people like that down in FL. As I stated in a reply to a reply from amelle, I've had far more luck finding friend-quality people online than in real life. Perhaps because online there are just innumerably more people to instantly contact, or perhaps because it's easier for me to tell if someone's my caliber of friend when I read their writing style as opposed to just seeing them across the way. That's one major benefit of online-ness...you meet people for what they think and say as opposed to how they look or where they hang out. Perhaps that's the problem...I just don't know where to go to meet the kind of people I appreciate as friends in real life. I should start hanging out at the Civic Media Center in Gainesville...or maybe the comp-sci department at UFL ( since all my college buds were comp-sci majors ). *sigh* what I really need to do is get a freakin' job. I feel like such an ass being a financial drain on my girlfriend now that we're living together in Florida. Guess it's time to deliver pizzas. Heh. At least I'll get to know my way around Gainesville...and who knows, maybe I'll meet friends at a delivery or something. Stranger things have happened.

As to new years...here are my resolutions:

Get a freakin' job

Resume my art with furious intensity

Get back in shape ( ie. hit the gym, lazy ass )

Research grad schools

Not all that bad considering. ( Is that an actual sentence? )

Now all I've got to do is drive back to FL on Tuesday / Wednesday and somehow miraculously pay the minimum on my credit card by the 8th. I wish that freaking pay online thing would hurry the hell up and verify my checking account so I could just get it over with :\

OK...so I'm getting ready to actually sleep, but of course I just can't go to bed. No. I've got to check everyone's away messages on my buddy list...just so I can find an excuse to stay up. After finding several odd quotes and mindless quizzes I notice the name "copydog" in the Newgrounds section of my buddy list. Being the forgetful soul that I am, I have no idea who the hell this is. So of course I check the info. Turns out he's someone I wrote a constructive and encouraging review for a flash animation on NG, and he IMed me to say thanks. Well...in his profile he had a link to his LiveJournal page. TADAA...one IM and a new LJ friend. Tis a small small small digital world.

Lets see...now I've got New Jersey, Washington, Singapore, and England...I win so hard.

Well...that was convenient. I've been considering the non-rude way of kicking NAOMiNESS out of my friends list, but couldn't come up with any. Well...I just checked out said list, and apparently she kicked me out of her friends list first. W00t. Saves me the trouble of being an ass. I guess my level-headed and adult-like comments got to be too annoying for her high school brand of illogic and hot-tempered-ness. Fair enough, for it was exactly those reasons that I didn't enjoy reading about her exploits. Guess I should have more thoroughly perused her journal before "friending" her.

In other news Jay (Raitaro/Ill) ended up adding me to his friends list after I likewise stumbled upon his LJ page through the wonderful random button. Turns out he's an artist / gamer / programmer / musician much like myself. Unfortunately the trials and tribulations of a world massed with uncaring idiots has taken a rather harsher toll on him than upon me. Check out his journal and you'll see what I mean. I hope he doesn't do anything rash, but it seems he's already thought of such things and realized the futility / folly therein.

So now I have LJ friends in New Jersey, Singapore, and Colchester England...how diverse :)

<lj:music>The bubbling of the fish tank</lj:music>

Heh...although you might think otherwise judging on the dearth of posts I've made here lately. It's been a busy season to say the least...yeesh...where to start?

OK...I guess I'll start with visiting Ben & Jen in Trenton last week, as it comes first chronologically. They're both doing good, and I got a ton of conversation from Jen about the current state of the art department at TCNJ and her classes' faculty review. Turns out one of my most favorite professors / artists of my college career, Chuck Kumnick, is retiring. It's a shame...he provided more oomph to my creativity and exploration of expression than anyone else in my higher education. He reminded me very much of my favorite high school art teacher, and was always someone I could trust for a useful and honest critique of my work. I think Ben got a little peeved as I talked to Jen for nearly the whole time she was there...sometimes I'm such a female type person in the modes and interests of my conversation. In any case Ben & I got to chill and watch some football after Jen went home for the evening. An enjoyable time was had by all.

Now, CHRISTMAS!!! Amazingly I managed to make out like a bandit. I got everything I really needed, and some other great stuff to boot! At Christmas Eve's celebration with Karla's family, I got 2 political books from her cousin that she had recommended: "Culture of Fear" and "Reefer Madness." The previous being one I had been dying to read for a while, and the latter being another book by an author I'd heartily enjoyed. Heh...I've already finished "Culture of Fear," an excellent read. The next day I indeed got the CD/DVD burner, Mac OS X.3 Panther, and a Radeon 9800 Pro video card. Unfortunately my Mom ended up getting the non-Mac version of the card, and I had to return it and order the correct model. Double unfortunately, there was a 15% restocking fee, and the Mac version is backordered for 4-6 weeks. I hate making my Mom pay more for my gifts because of technology related mishaps :( In other gift news, I got some fantastic khaki pants, a gorgeous pocket watch with neato-keen blue anodized hands, and a new cell phone! Yay! On the "fun" side, I received the 1st 2nd and 3rd seasons of "Family Guy" which I had hinted at, but totally didn't expect to receive. Yay some more! Merry Christmas to meeeeeeee! Hehehe.

The day after Xmas Karla and I traveled to the north of NJ to visit with our mutual friends Heather & Drew. Originally we had planned on meeting them up at Heather's parents' farm where she was staying, and hitting up a bar or whatnot. Unfortunately in the interim, Heather's younger ( 17 ) brother ended up bringing friends home who managed to sneak in 2 gallons of vodka and a 40 pack of beer. After various vomit-filled shenanigans and several of the intoxicated boys sneaking out to drive home at 2 in the morning, Heather's Mom decided that we couldn't be trusted to visit with Heather up at the farm alone, and if she couldn't make it up there to "supervise" we'd have to visit Heather and Drew at the family home instead. Heather's Mom is a bit of an über Catholic, and excessively protective of her only daughter, but even considering that, both Karla and I thought it a little much to imply that 4 22+year old college graduates needed a baby sitter to have a few drinks in a house for which the daughter is paying rent to her parents for. Karla was so peeved we almost didn't go up to see them at all. In any case, we did, and a good time was had by all. We hit up an amazing restaurant in Parsippany called the "American Cafe" which served regional cuisine from all over the US. I chose to go "Nawleens" style, and feasted on chicken & sausage gumbo and blackened shrimp and scallops. Good lord, it was awesome. We ended up discussing politics, society, ethics, morality, religion and other such weighty subjects over dinner, and then further into the night over alcoholic libations in Heather's basement. It's awesome having friends with whom this is your average conversational fare and I truly miss being close enough to visit with them. Florida is nice and all, but we've yet to really make friends...a prospect neither Karla nor I look forward to...both of us being far from social butterflies.

Lets see...getting to tome-like proportions already, so time to condense.

OK...hung out with my friends Renshaw & his lady Tiffany for the celebration of the 21st birthday. Needless to say we got wasted. He gave me some much needed advice about my art...mainly "stop being a pussy and get on with your life." I really need to stop moping around and send out slides and the like, get my new art ideas in gear, and apply to grad school. Otherwise I'm going to end up like my Dad...stuck in a dead-end job I can't stand to support my wife and family. I'll not have that.

Helped my uncle Randy with learning Flash. Turns out he's taking it in a computer class and was having difficulty. As I taught myself Flash, I was rather quick to show him the sensible ways of going about the program. From what I've heard in subsequent phone conversations, he's over the big hump in the learning curve, and the rest is coming to him pretty well. I feel useful :)

Hung out with my cousin and lifelong friend Stepehen. He's doing well...has a girl I really like for once. He's been a victim of online dating schemes for a couple of years now, and has only managed to find girls he'll lust after, and then get bored with. Unfortunately he's still in that high school mode of trying to find a woman to "complete him" regardless of how many times I try and tell him that he needs to complete himself and then find a girl that complements his completed self. I guess that's just another love / life lesson that you need to learn on your own. He's been in a band for years, and hoping to hit it big. I feel kind of bad for him, as his band is mediocre at best. I think this is finally starting to dawn on him, and it hurts me to see him so crestfallen. He's got the same problem as my art with his music recording / mixing ambitions. He's dropped thousands upon thousands of $$ into recording and mixing equipment, but now he's too afraid of failure to take the chances and experiment enough with it to actually learn and grow in the business. I almost want to take the equipment from him, because I know I'd make better use of it. It's not that I'm more creative or musically inclined than him, I just don't have the fear of failing at something important to me in that respect. He's so worried about being great he won't even let himself be OK. I can just make shit up on his mixer that sounds way better than what he's taken weeks to mix down because I'm not afraid about going about it the wrong way or doing things in a manner unlike the norm. He's very technically precise, but not willing to give up total control to experiment and see what works. I'm afraid he'll give up on this prospect as he has with others in his life, when he does indeed have an ear for music and training in mixing techniques and equipment. I also see him falling into the same trap my father has been in for years. He's got a full time job, but he really doesn't like what he does. It saps all his energy, and he resents it, yet it provides the money for him to buy the things he thinks he needs to be happy, like the mixing equipment. What good is the equipment if his work leaves him drained of inspiration and desire to work on it? He's older than me, but I feel in many ways that I've advanced beyond him in my understanding of the world and human nature, emotions and relationships. It pains me to see him struggling and questioning love and fate, when all he has to do is live his life and take actions toward what he really wants. Then again I should be doing the same thing as far as my art is concerned.

So much for this not getting any longer :\

OK...ending. With a resolution: to throw myself into my art with all the strength that I have, otherwise it will stay no more than a hope and a hobby. If I don't believe in myself...who the hell else will?

    <lj:music>Mom singing random Christmas carols</lj:music>

Nothing against Karla, but it was fantastic to talk to someone else intelligent for a change.

My friend Steve swung by my house around 10 on his way home from college in Trenton. We drove around for nearly an hour, then hit up a diner, and then continued to drive around until 1 in the morning. It was quite refreshing to talk about intelligence, computing, light speed theory, time travel & space-time distortion, responsibility, drugs, propaganda, and other such things.

One of the interesting things we came to was that our current computing networks are like the brain stem and other unconscious regions of the brain. They do what they're supposed to do because they're supposed to do it, and they do it very well. However, they lack the ability to infer...to make an educated guess based upon previous experience / information. Thus, while a human mind without a definite answer can come up with a suggestion and then test it, a computer comes up with an error message...404, answer not found. As soon as we create a cerebrum and cerebellum for the highly advanced brain stem we've been refining for years, computing will really take off. Unfortunately it will also most likely become classically intelligent and self-aware. I don't think those in charge are quite ready for that much of a paradigm shift.

In a similar vein, we talked about human evolution and itelligence. I figured out exactly what we as a human species need. I'm thinking a 4/5 reduction of the human population...based on intellect. Now, I'm not saying they get killed...or even dissapear...more like suddenly they never existed, so no one would miss them. I had a very long conversation last night with my good friend Steve on the topic of human evolution. As it's obvious that the only thing evolving is our cognitive capability, it would seem that those who are smarter are more highly evolved...simply based upon the fact that intelligence is extremely important for creating the technology and the advancements that have led to mankind's expansion and dominance. The only issue is our communal style of living wherein everyone benefits from the intelligent minority's advancements. The net effect is expansion instead of evolution. The top continues to advance upward, as the bottom continues to stay where it is. Instead of a steadily progressing upward line, we get an ever-multiplying pyramid with the top getting ever smarter, and the bottom staying at the bottom. I hope that makes sense =\ In essence what I'm asking for is enforced evolution. A bit harsh, yes...but I believe it's just about the only way we can save ourselves outside of heading to Mars / other planets.

Another topic that came up was the RIAA and the idiocy of their new restrictions. Steve told me about a sample community in one of the Nordic countries in which all the residents ( who had never had computers before ) were given top of the line windows systems and a fully functional high-speed intranet and internet access. They used the systems as one would expect, to share information. Pretty obvious as this is what networking was designed for. Indeed, they started sharing digital music, as it is only another form of information made readily accessible by our computing systems. This just goes to prove that file sharing is not some kind of corrupt child of online pirates, but the natural evolution of a system designed to easily and quickly share information. The RIAA was essentially doomed the first time someone sent an email. Now they're just fighting to maintain their hegemony in a system in which they're no longer needed. With any luck, file sharing will continue to increase, and the RIAA will eventually find itself without a job. Unlikely, but we can hope, can't we?

In other happy news, I've got my next 2 projects lined up art-wise. One I'd had in the back of my mind for quite a while, but just never got around to, and the other came up in conversation while Steve and I drove. I'd love to explain them here, but for some crazy reason I'm afraid someone will see them and pull them off before I can. There was a large amount of mutual respect and admiration for each other's ideas in the art department at college, and among my friends. But there is no honor among the faceless masses of the internet. Better safe than sorry.

Today, I try and find Sean. Not an easy task.

    <lj:music>TV news in the background</lj:music>

*shiver*
I'm still not used to this northern weather. It's amazing how fast you can get acclimated to a warm climate. I can't wait to head back to a Florida winter with its 50 degree average lows.

So far being home has been good to me. Finished up my Christmas shopping the other day when I went on the mall circuit with my cousin and good friend Steve. I feel bad for the guy...he can't seem to get a break when it comes to women. Seems now he's met a girl Amanda who really suits him personality-wise, but not perfectly physically. I told him the personality was the hardest and more important part, and all love involves a little give and take on both sides. Hopefully he listens to me, but his track record speaks otherwise. In any event I look forward to meeting her on Tuesday when she, Karla, my cousin and I are doing the dinner and a movie thing. Going to see the Return of the King. With any luck Karla's bladder will last the entire 3.5 hours, but I wouldn't put money on it =)

I went and saw Something's Gotta Give with my Mom and sister yesterday. Good movie even if it borders on a chick-flick. Jack Nicholson is getting old, but he's still funny, and the movie as a whole was really cute. I'd reccomend it...though perhaps not to my guy friends. Later last night I went to see my future nephews ( Karla's sister's kids ) and have dinner over at Karla's parents' house. Dylan and Nicholas are both adorable...Dylan is 3 and more than a handful, while Nicholas is coming up on 2, and just hitting the advanced babbling stage. Dylan calls me his "buddy" and tags around enlessly trying to play with me. I can't help but oblige...he's a lot of fun, but can get really annoying really fast when he doesn't stop as I try and talk to his Aunt and Grandparents. He had a holiday chorus-type-thing with his preschool last night, which was the reason for my visit. It was cute, and I got the job of videographer, as I was the tallest besides Karla's Dad, who was busy keeping an eye on / holding Nicholas. Dylan didn't sing much, but made for some cute video moments...and I managed to capture Nicholas and his mother dancing...which was beyond adorable.

Later when we got back, we watched Pirates of the Caribean which I had not seen before. Fantastic movie. Johny Depp was excellent and the whole movie was flawless...except for one really stupid line by the female lead that I can't recall at the moment. Probably better that way.

In any case it's been a good couple of days, and I'm really looking forward to heading out to Trenton to see my friends from school. Lucky me that all of my college buddies were either going-on seniors or super-duper-seniors when I left for FL. They all happen to live in 2 houses near campus, which happen to be right next to each other. How convenient.

    <lj:music>Annoying IM noises >=(</lj:music>

No, not LSD =P

It was quite the insane undertaking. It started with kitties spazzing out when we shut the door to their travel kennel thing. So that was out. Karla and I had to run to the local PETsMART and get them leashes and harnesses. They ended up sleeping in their kennel most of the time anyway. One of us drove, and the other sat in the back and looked after the kitties. We even had a litter pan in the back of the car with them. Surprisingly enough it worked pretty well after the first time. Kibble peed, then immediately stepped in the pee-clay cement and then the dry litter, and shook it all over the car. After that we picked them up immediately after they were done doing their business so they couldn't excavate the entire contents of the litter box. They were kind of traumatized by the first 10 hr. leg of our journey and were acting all scared and skittish when we hit the motel outside of Richmond VA. The mini meow recovered pretty quickly, but the fat cat went and secreted himself under the motel TV stand. Had to move furniture to get him out. Then he ninja-ed his way behind the bed, and he only came out to eat. Luckily we noticed and plugged the entrances to the hole with pillows. By morning he was cool with it.

Once we got to my parents house, ( where both they and I will be staying for the holidays ) I took their litter box and set it up in our cellar. Then, like an idiot, I showed them where it was and let them free in the cellar. Our cellar is unfinished, and is the equivalent of a kitty terror jungle. It was cold, dark, and full of crazy crap from wall to wall. They promptly disappeared into the shadows, and later I had to lure them out of the basement with their food dish. They were both huddled wide-eyed in a corner, covered in cobwebs, terrified. Poor kitties. Once I dragged their kitty butts upstairs, they settled in pretty fast, ninja slinking their way around the house in wider and wider circles. They met my Mom and Dad, and seem to be pretty happy with the nooks and crannies in the house. The basement was just too different from the normal apartment world they were used to.

I'm currently filling out this journal entry on my parent's PC. God I hate windows. I had almost forgotten how much it sucks ass. There's no spell checker in IE, so I'm going to have to copy and paste this whole entry into Word, because spelling errors drive me insane, and I just won't have them in anything I post online. On top of that I want to strangle the life out of everyone over at AOL. My Mom recently updated this piece of junk from Windows ME to XP ( thank god ) and in the process downloaded the latest AIM client. Cool right? WRONG! Those bastards at AOL have chosen to design this latest release so that you can't turn off the annoying-as-all-hell sounds. Well, you can get some new sounds, but you have to get a new "expression set" and to do that, you have to subscribe to some crazy service for $1.99 a month or $9.95 a year. Those money-grubbing assholes! I can't even delete this actions set to get rid of those stupid sounds. I want some kind of sound for recieving IMs so I don't miss them, but hearing a sound when I send my own is just retarded. Like I don't know I'm sending it when I hit enter, and need an alert. Seriously now.

In other computer news I keep going over to the right of the screen to launch programs from a non-existent dock. I freakin hate Windows.

<lj:music>The muffled bass lines coming through the floor</lj:music>

Well, time's almost come to head on back up to frigid New Jersey for the holidays. This should be fun. Driving 1000 miles with a pair of kitties in a cage. With any luck they'll stop meowing pitifully after the first 2 hours or so =\ Equally disturbing is going to be having the tiny baking pan cum litter-box in the cage with them. We've swapped out their full size one with this new tiny thing already so they get used to it, and thankfully they've managed to keep their bodily functions contained in the tiny thing...but they still have issues with not excavating all the litter out of the box when they're covering their business. More daunting is the smell...it's bad enough in our apartment...but in a closed car? Karla seems to think we can just empty it every time we stop to change drivers...but I'm thinking she'll change her tune once one of those lovable felines takes a mighty dump.

My quest to find LJ friends has gone OK thus far. The first random cool person I found was NAOMiNESS, and she got right back to me, which was kinda neat. She seems crazy and fun, and reminds me of some of my friends from back in HS. I've already taken several wacky quizzes she's posted on her journal, and it turns out my biggest secret is that I ran over a kid with a car. How sad.

My other new LJ friend is Amelle whom I at first assumed was from Britain, but it turns out is actually from Singapore. Oooh...exotic. She seems amusedly perplexed about my finding her journal as she hadn't done any advertising for it yet, but the LJ random journal button knows no bounds. She even put a link to me in her latest post....I'm her first LJ friend! GLEE! Additionally, judging by her post it seems the Christmas spirit is getting felt worldwide. Still doesn't seem quite right to me....guess I'm still not used to this Florida weather. It's December 15, and I'm sitting here with all the windows open in pants and a T shirt. It's a balmy 65 degrees. I suppose the icy chill of New Jersey will get me in the Christmas mode. Hope the kitties don't freeze...

I'm still desperately hunting for employment, and despite having at least 9 job agents running on 4 different job hunting sites, I'm coming up with crap. I've applied to pretty much anything I think won't bore me to death, but still no real word except for that one Desktop Computer Technician position with the United States Geological Survey ( USGS ). I can't currently remember If I talked about this on here already, but it's on my mind now so here goes. The position is basically exactly the job I did for 2 years back in college. That makes me ideal for the position, and according to the representative I've talked to I'm pretty much a shoe-in out of the applicants they've had. This is a one year temporary position, but may be extended indefinitely if they see fit. The pay looks good, about 30K a year with full benefits starting immediately, and the job is actually contracted through CSC one of the largest computer-based companies in the world. Sounds fantastic right? Unfortunately there's a catch. The USGS' budget has yet to be passed by congress. Without a budget, they can't contract out the job, and without the contract I obviously can't work. This was all supposed to be figured out so the job could start on the 1st of November. Well...here it is ½ way through December and still no word. And yeah, I've been calling in and checking up regularly so they know I'm still available and interested. From what I can gather from the lady who's my contact at CSC, I'm one of the few hangers on for the job...so it seems I'll get it...if it ever actually comes into existence.

In other news, I should probably go start getting my clothes and tolitries into some kind of order. That and make some lunch. *sigh* I hate packing.

Yep...slept in late. Ahhhh...I really love doing that. It was in the 70s today...sure doesn't feel like Christmas is coming up. We had the sliding door open, but our next-door neighbors were drinking, and threatening to hit, evict, and throw each other off the balcony...so we ended up closing up the house. Karla spent most of today on the 'puter, so I was forced to watch TV. Saw some crazy crap about insane 4x4 racing. Neat. Then I got sent on an errand to buy some broccoli, cream of mushroom soup, and shredded cheddar cheese so we could make up some broccoli bake for the entomology department's "Bug Family Traditions" holiday potluck get-together thingy. It was actually a lot of fun. I got to meet some of Karla's fellow entomology grad students, and hung out in the kids room helping them make Christmasy crafts. I even got a neat little gingerbread man who hangs over my pocket out of the deal.

I need to do some more work on my site, but it seems it's going to involve some JavaScript, and that particular scripting language has been giving me issues, so I'm kind of loathe to start on it. Seems everything I try and do with it is a bit too complex for my grasp of it. I've also got to meet some people here on LJ so this isn't quite so traditional a journal. Yeah, it's cool getting my days and feelings down in data, but it's the ability for comments and responses that makes this whole idea so interesting. My only qualm is that it will then be another message-board type thing for me to dump hours and hours of time into. I already spend too much time over at the NG BBS and this would more than likely be worse, as I'd have to respond to some people for them to consider reading and responding to my journal. Anywho, I'm going to go check out some of the random groups on here and see what I can find. Wish I could search by actual user information so I could see if any of my friends other than Tyska already have accounts here...

Oooh...almost forgot. Made a new sig image for that kid Mexicoman. Yeah, I know, I know...I said I wouldn't put any more of that on here as it was getting old, but I'm kind of proud of this one. Pretty much he just wanted his old sig animated. I did that, and it came out pretty damn cool if I do say so myself.

I think I'm obsessed. I stayed up really late again last night making yet more sig images. I'm not going to post them here, as it's just getting old.

In other news I went and got a haircut today. I've found an excellent little barber shop here in Gainesville, and had a great conversation with the stylist. He comes off as gay, but I'm not sure. In any case, we ended up talking about trends in the sexual environment in the US. Very interesting stuff...apparently more men are beginning to seek out lesbians as friends...sort of the analogy for women having gay friends. According to him, a show he watched said the trend was up, as men are looking to find female friends they can connect with without having the sex issue come between them. Makes perfect sense to me. It appears men and women can be "just friends" after all. We also discussed the legal issues with gay marriage, the state of affairs in Vermont and Massachusetts, and other such things. He's a very intelligent guy, and pleasent to converse with, and gives a great haircut to boot. I definitely have found my barber shop.

In another vein, while perusing the forum over at Atomic Wang Productions ( the site of one of my favorite web comics, Decorative Edison&nbsp) I came across an interesting link. It's a list of the 10 most overpaid jobs in the US and is really quite informative and disturbing. Most of them are caused by strangleholds on an industry by unions, nepotism, and other unsavory things. Pisses me off...I think I'm going to become an airport skycap.

Oooh. My über web-savvy friend Ken has sent me another crazy yet interesting link. It's the world index of symbols. Damn...there are lots of em...and information about each symbol and what it stands for. For instance, did you know that Neptune is the planetary ruler of intoxicating plants, like marijuana, the coca bush, the opium poppy, the peyote cactus, and the psilocybine mushroom?

Well...I stayed up all night the night before last, and worked on a flash animation. Got a lot done, but kinda blew my sleep schedule all to hell. Spent most of yesterday working on this new sig image for the Newgrounds BBS but after a ton of effort it turns out it's too big to use. 72kb too big...which may not seem like that much, until you realize the limit is 40kb. Yeah...overshot that just a bit. Anyway, the reason I was making yet another sig image for myself was a thread about the sexiest sig image on the BBS. This guy Ozcar had a pretty hott anime chick as his image, and I was looking to go for something in that direction, but I didn't have any good ideas for starting. Then, while browsing Newgrounds, inspiration struck in the form of an animated GIF. While it's too damn large to actually use, here it is for your viewing pleasure. Just remember before you go calling me a crass pig...it was supposed to be sexy...but in a manner attractive to the 14-16 crowd that generally populates NG.

[!] Image removed due to rampant Hotlinking [!]

After that day of imagery, I went to bed at 8pm, and didn't get up today 'til noon thirty. Ahhh. 16 hours of blessed sleep. I've spent the morning cleaning up the pile of dishes Karla and I have allowed to accumulate in the sink. We've both not been in the mood to clean, and I finally got fed up. Dried on potatoes are a pain in the ass to get off...damn sticky carbohydrates.

In other news, I got an email today about beta testing for the Q-loader™ a new innovation in the paintball loader market. I'm pretty psyched as it seems to be the exact solution I've been looking for for years. In fact, I'd thought of this concept of a helically fed loading system, but could never work out the engineering side of it. I give major props to this guy for pulling it off. If I ever win the lottery ( or land an über job ) I'll be using a slew of these babies in my mega-custom paintball arsenal.

Had an interesting dream last night...an it had nothing to do with that crazy webcam either, thank the gods. It was airsoft oriented ( for those who don't know, airsoft is a sport not unlike paintball, except it uses guns which are precise replicas of actual weapons which fire little [ 6 mm ] plastic BBs ) and involved me whooping the crap out of the opposing team...a feat which I haven't managed to replicate in real life. Quite a lot of fun actually...even though in the dream I was using an
M-4 - as opposed to my actual weapon, an MP5-K. -

In other news I got around to doing something worthwhile today. Go me. I set up an appointment tomorrow to get the belts and hoses changed on the car @ 9 am. Yay, early. I also went over to the local One-Stop Career Center and signed up. Turns out those applications I'd been faxing all the hell over the place could have just been brought to their attention, and then I could just send them to the appropriate employer. Grr...should have went sooner. Better late than never I guess. I also applied online for deferment on my student loans. Now I have 6 months to find a job before I have to apply for deferment again. I hope I won't be having to do that. With any luck the automated job scouts I have running daily on 4 different job search sites will come up with a job by then.

Wish me luck.

OK...I was just over at the NGBBS when I found a topic devoted to a site. Not just any site...the most disturbing site I've ever seen. Don't worry...the content is "work safe" ( it's not like goatse or anything ), but.....i dunno....words can't explain it. It's a webcam feed...a live feed by the looks of it, except it features...well...I'll just have to show you to do it justice.

the pic is a link to the site...feel free to see "her" in action. It's so disturbing I couldn't pull myself away for nearly a half hour. From what I can tell by sight, it's a guy...with a mask...and a full body fleshtone jumpsuit. You wanna talk about bizarre?

Anyway, I spent most of my day perusing the NGBBS and most of the evening making some new sig images for myself. My current one I quite like...it matches up with the style of the [ 2 6 - 7 6 ] section of my site. Take a look.

Its color blends into the background of the NGBBS, but doesn't work quite so well here. Anywho, you get the idea.

Well, it's late...I'm heading to bed. Gotta hit the Job Bank tomorrow and set up an appointment for new belts and hoses on the car. Fun fun.
